  • Sa-ro-ja movie review

One ordinary day, four ordinary men, one extraordinary occurrence. This is the tagline of Saroja. t’s the return of the victorious team of Chennai 6000028.

Venkat Prabhu has done the impossible, his second directorial venture Saroja, is far superior to his debut film Chennai- 600028!

Ganesh Kumar, Ram Babu, Jagapathi Babu and Ajay Raj are the four protagonists of the story. The movie begins with four of them setting off in a car towards Hyderabad to catch a cricket-one-day-international. But what happens is more exciting than just a 50 over cricket match, perhaps something more exciting than they would have bargained for. Things start to go wrong when an untoward incident on the road threatens to spoil their trip. But the youngsters have spirits that will not be dampened and that is exactly what leads them to the centre of a conspiracy. Taking a deviation from the highway, they make their way through an isolated path hoping to rejoin the main road at a later point.

But events start taking unexpected turns by the moment. An accident, a few gunshots, a heart stopping incident, a few goons, a missed purse and a girl (Saroja) all alone in the middle of nowhere leave them bewildered. It is only slowly revealed that what they have seen are the moving parts of an immaculately planned conspiracy. As the threads are unraveled, henchmen, policemen, a high flying businessman and many others are at different ends of the conspiracy

On the downside, the plot is much too precarious a peg for nearly two hours forty minutes film. The chase and running around between our heroes and the kidnappers is too long and at times repetitive.

Yet these amount to minor cinematic liberties considering the film as a whole. Never before have you smiled and sighed so spontaneously while joining a group of likeable guys in their quest for fun which lands them in an awkward situation.

Among the cast, all have come out with superb performances that makes the film work big time. S.P.B Charan as Jagapathy Babu suits the role and is fantastic, especially the scene where he gets trapped in a small hole in the factory gate due to his size, and is tugged from both the sides.

Shiva as Ajay Raj, the swaggering show-off small time television actor is superb and amazingly candid. Vaibhav for a newcomer is a revelation.

But the dark horse who emerges the winner is Premgi, he is a scream as Ganesh. The laughs follow from his whacky dialogues and one-liners.

Nikitha looks glamorous, Vega as Saroja suits the role, Prakash Raj, Jayaram and Sampath add richness to the overall effect of the movie.

Yuvan and Venkat have now become a force with perfect understanding and beautiful music video style picturisation- Dost Bada Dost… and Kodana Kodi.., being the pick of the lot.Sakthi Saravanan's camera work is impressive, with the night and aerial shots of Hyderabad standing out.

On the whole the film is fresh, funky and cool. Bravo, Venkat Prabhu.

    Verdict: Go for it !!!!
